Rare Factory Color Combination
Background
I am retired now but, when I was a kid, I remember when Hot Wheels Cars were first introduced. I was at the local department store with my dad and he told me to pick one. I stood and stared at the jeweler’s case for what seemed like an hour before I could decide…
This is that Hot Wheels Car – Blue Metallic/Black Vinyl with White Interior
History
About 5 years ago, a friend of mine called to tell me about a 1968 Camaro that had been traded-in at a Ford Racing shop in Niles, Michigan. He said he thought of me because it was blue and a Z/28. Being an old car guy, I promptly loaded up my truck and was off to Niles where I met James Brown, the owner of this Ford Shop. He didn’t know much about the car but had the original engine block, cylinder heads, carburetor, etc. in another building and he didn’t want the car because it was a Chevrolet. An hour later, we struck a deal and the Z/28 was off to my place in Columbia City, IN.
At first, I didn’t realize my unnatural attraction to the car other than it was a cool color combination with great options. It was a year before I realized it was the same color combination as my first Hot Wheels Car. So, with true car-guy logic, I recruited some friends and started a two year restoration on this Z/28 because now I had Inspiration!
Drive-Train
I wanted to build this car right. So, in my town I have a friend who is quite the local legend, Tom Sroufe. Tom is the former 1986 IHRA World Champion in Modified Eliminator. He is an 8-Time National Event Winner in IHRA and a 23-Time National Record Holder. Tom competed with small block Chevrolets and 4-Speed Transmissions for 32 years, well before most of us had our driver’s licenses. He is also a professional machinist, engine builder and welder.
Tom agreed to build the engine and the following is a list of everything that was done:
Tom also performed all of the transmission work including:
I was very nervous on the day we were ready to fire the engine for the first time. I wanted the camshaft broken in correctly and the rings to seat properly. Tom looked at me like I was an idiot. The engine fired on the first crank.
I took photos of the entire machine and assembly process and they are included in the photobucket link. Dennis and I performed all of the detailing and finish work on the engine compartment.
Paint and Body
All of the sheet-metal on the car including the floors and trunk pan are original. The car was painted by John Buchanan in base coat/clear coat and is absolutely gorgeous. My brother-in-law, Dennis, performed all of the prep, final buffing and finishing on the car. Dennis has been a professional painter for 28 years and is a judge for the Classic Chevy International Club.
Interior
The Z/28 is equipped with the rare Ivory Houndstooth Custom Interior. It was in beautiful condition when I purchased the car and completely original. The only items that were changed are the carpeting and I ordered front seat covers from Legendary Interiors. The driver’s seat was split and could not be repaired. The original seat covers will come with the car.
This Z/28 is also equipped with a factory console, gauges and the Tic-Toc-Tach. All very original, rare and fully functional.
Documentation
I kept detailed photo records of the Z/28 as it was restored. All of the photos will be provided with the car as well as an extensive collection of receipts for all of the work that was performed and parts that were sourced.
Performance
This car is completely sorted out. It has approximately 200 miles since completion and the engine has never run on anything other than 110 Octane Sunoco. Every light, switch, gauge and component operate as they should. It would make a great car for someone that does not have the ability or desire to build their own car but, would like to own one that performs like “Back in the Day”.
This engine is Awesome! It makes all of the right noises, pulls better than most big blocks, and will scream all the way to 7,000 RPMs. Tom is an unbelievable engine builder and this car is a show-case of his work.
Now, for all of you Numbers Guys
The following delineates all of the relevant decoding for this vehicle’s V.I.N. (Vehicle Identification Number), Cowl Tag, Engine Block Casting Numbers, Engine Block Casting Date, Engine Code Stampings, Cylinder Head Casting Numbers, Transmission Case Casting Numbers and Stampings, Transmission Extension and Bell Housing Casting Numbers, Differential Casting Numbers and Stampings, Distributor and Carburetor Identification, Intake/Exhaust Manifold Casting Numbers and all associated date codes.
Vehicle Identification 124378N474159
Cowl 07C
ST NOR 176400 BODY
ST(Style) = Refers to the model year and model identification number
PNT(Paint) = Refers to the exterior paint codes
Engine Block Casting 3914678
= 1968
Main Caps = 2-bolt
Engine Casting F 17 8
Note: The engine block casting date appropriately coincides with the engine’s assembly date of July 7th,1968.
Engine Code 18N474159
Note: This engine’s stamping correctly coincides with the build date of this vehicle – the Third Week of July, 1968.
474159 = Last Six Digits of the Vehicle's VIN.
Cylinder Head Casting 3917291 E 3 8
Valve = 2.02 Intake / 1.60 Exhaust
Combustion Chamber = 63.995 cc
E 3 = May 3rd, 1968 Casting Date on both heads
Note: Both heads display the same casting number. This head started production in 1967 and continued through 1968. Casting Symbol is a double hump. The heads were mildly ported, fitted with all new valves, valve springs, guides and retaining hardware by Tom.
Transmission Case Code P8C08B
Note: This transmission case is not the original transmission but it is correctly dated for the car. The Muncie linkage has been completely rebuilt and is original to the car including the shift gate. A new clutch that was built by Tom Sroufe was installed along with a new steel flywheel.
Differential Code BV0122G
BV = Axle Prefix: Posi 4.10:1 Camaro 12 Bolt Differential
Differential Casting 3894860 NF
1967-69 12-Bolt Camaro Rear Differential
Radiator, Pulleys, Fan and Fan Clutch
While the Radiator has been service replaced, the Fan Blade (part # 3871276), Fan Clutch (part # 3927103)and all of the pulleys (part # 1970831) are Z/28 original equipment!
Distributor 111169 7M5
GM distributor dated December 5th, 1967
Intake Manifold Casting 3917610
Horsepower = 290
Carb Type = 4BBL Holley
Note: This intake manifold is correct for this vehicle. This intake manifold was used on all 1967 and 1968 Camaro Z/28s.
Carburetor Holley 3923289 DZ
Note: This is the original carburetor for this Z/28 and has been completely rebuilt.
Exhaust Manifold Casting 3893608 (right)
Horsepower = 290 and various
Note: These are the correct manifolds for this car.
Gardner Exhaust System
Eric Gardner and his family make the best original equipment style exhaust systems, period. So, that’s what I installed including all stainless steel clamps and a new heat riser valve.
A.I.R. Equipment (Smog)
The complete original A.I.R. System was reinstalled on the engine. All of the hoses and clamps, the pump, the diverter valve and the pulley are original. The only reproduction item used were the manifold tubes as the original had been cut. This is a very rare system and completely functional.
Power Brake 9078
The original 9078 Power Brake Booster was disassembled and cad-plated in the original finish. This was not the highly polished finish that you see on aftermarket boosters. It is more of a textured, satin-finish cadmium like the factory. This was fitted with the correct master cylinder and the original four piston disc brake calipers and rear drums were rebuilt.
Suspension
The suspension has been completely rebuilt including all front end components, ball joints and springs.
Wheels and Tires
The Z/28 is equipped with the correct 15x6 Rally Wheels, Trim Rings and Center Caps. It wears the correct reproduction E70x15 Goodyear Wide Tread GTs.
Spare Tire
The original 15x6 “DF” Wheel and Original Non-DOT E70x15 Tire are still in the trunk. I think this is really cool and quite a testament to the low mileage.
Special Thanks
I would like to thank Former IHRA World Champion and my friend, Tom Sroufe, for all of his master craftsmanship building this engine and drive-train, John Buchanan for the expert paint work and upholstery, and my brother-in-law, Dennis Laughlin, for bringing the entire project together and simply laughing when I asked him, ”Do you think that we were going a bit too far?”
And last but certainly not least, my dad, who always had time for me and an extra dollar for a kid’s “Hot Wheels Dream Car”!
Bidding
I love my old cars. I currently own 16 Chevrolets and Pontiacs. I am selling this car in order to fund my next project. This is not a fire sale but I have a very reasonable Reserve Price.
In fairness to everyone, please do not bid if you have Less than 5 Feedbacks or Negative Feedback without contacting me first. I will delete any bids that do not follow these guidelines.
While this is a beautifully prepared Z/28, it is a 42 year old car and is therefore being sold As Is/Where Is and No Warranties are being Expressed or Implied.
