This Tanner Foust 1973 Datsun 240Z was built for the BBC's Top Gear USA Show episode "Car for Life" S06E04 (https://youtu.be/mXkZaGbpPEk). It is powered by a 5.7-liter Chevy small block with a 700r4 gearbox mated to a R200 rearend. The engine swap was not featured or mentioned on the show. Maybe to avoid the purists negative comments. The seller acquired the car from a third party in Bakersfield CA (2016) who purchased it from the Top Gear Show Mechanic.

After the purchase, the seller had the car gone through with over $7500 in repairs and upgrades. There are tons of receipts and records for your perusal since the seller has acquired the car. The seller has added approximately 500 miles during his 2 year ownership.

Provenance;

The car was used on the Season 6 Episode 4 Top Gear USA show. This 240z was chosen by the Rally Car Driver/Formula Drifter Tanner Foust as the car he would chose if you only had one car to chose from birth to death. On the show it did not run that well, had noticeable front shock bouncing and the interior was pretty beat up. Though there is no documentation to prove this car was on the show. An astute Z person can see the various one off details in this car that can be seen on the show. The seller did speak with Rutledge Wood at SEMA who starred on the show and said he would sign an authenticity letter which has been sent to him. When this is returned to the seller it will be forwarded to the new owner.

Suspension;

The front/rear suspension is off a 280z to handle the extra weight and power with new lower Vogland springs, shocks, new tie rods, ball joints, steering rack boots and poly suspension bushings throughout.

Interior;

Complete interior sound deadening, new carpet, 350z seats (custom made brackets), steering wheel is a Nismo Drift Wheel from the UK mated to a NRG hub. Lastly the ignition switch is new with keys.

Electronics;

The Tachometer is currently not functioning due to the engine swap. Speedometer works but needs to be calibrated. Temperature gauge is non-operable as well as the volt gauge. All of the lights, clock and turn signals are said to function properly. The heater and blower have been retained and are in working order. 42892k miles are shown on the 5-digit mechanical odometer.

Brakes;

All new 4 disc conversion, pads and brake line. The front brakes have been converted to Toyota 4 pistons and vented 300zx R1 cross drilled and slotted rotors, spacers and mounting bracket. Rear brakes are new Maxima calipers with brackets and R1 cross drilled and slotted non-vented rotors.

Tires and Wheels;

The car currently wears a set of 15″ Rota RB alloys measuring 8.5″ up front and 9″ in back.

Paint;

The car was repainted blue at some point, then Orange by the previous owner, more than likely for the TV Show. The did not do a full color change. The underside of the hood, door jams and interior of the hatch seams are a metallic blue. The is some paint chips, holes drilled when Tanner had Fender Flares at the end of the show when the Stig was chasing him. He tapped the bumper in the episode, torn off some bumper rubber and cracked the left rear taillight. There is also some apple sauce in the rear seams and in various located where the baby food exploded during a challenge on the show. Most has been cleaned, but some left in for effect and prosperity.

Engine;

The 5.7 small block Chevy had a new carb, aluminum radiator, auto switched dual fan set up with a puller fan in the front, new Sanderson Headers (custom/modified to fit), complete custom dual exhaust system with a Magnaflow dual muffler, X Pipe, and carbon Akrapovic tips (sounds amazing). All fluids have been recently changed. The starter needs to be shimmed as it makes a little flywheel noise when starting. There some minor leaks from the transmission pan gasket as well as the front oil pan gasket and front cover where the previous owner had put orange silicon. A full engine reseal is recommended.

A compression check has been performed with all cylinders in good condition and are as follows;

Front of Engine
1. 175 - 2. 180
3. 165 - 4. 180
5. 170 - 6. 175
7. 165 - 8. 165
Back of Engine

Rear End;

To handle the new power upgrade the rear end has been changed to a R200 as well as a new diff mount has been installed.

Rust;

There is minimal rust, floor pans, battery box, door jams, stabilizers, fenders are in good shape with the driver's side dented floor board being dented from the bottom (see photo).

Misc;

Lastly the ignition switch was changed and a new Red Top Optima Battery installed.

The rebuild was completed approximately 200 miles ago with current tags, is registered through 2018 and the car is now being offered with a clean California title in the seller's name.

This is a one of a kind 240z with Top Gear History for the auto enthusiast, rides very tight, its sounds great and drives even better.
