1965 Cobra S/C

Professionally built and maintained Jaguar XKE based 1965 427 S/C Cobra Roadster, built with new parts; no used parts or junk yard parts were used on the car after being brought to the U.S. in 1995. It is powered by a 351 CI 385 hp Ford H.O. SVO roller crate engine, although it has been upgraded with a higher lift Comp Roller Cam that should allow it to produce over 400 estimated hp. It has a new five speed Tremec T5 transmission with a Jaguar fully indepenent limited slip rear end with inboard disc brakes. It is very quick, agile, extremely dependable and comfortable. We live in the San Francisco East Bay and it is the kind of car that we could just hop into and take a drive to Monterey or Lake Tahoe without having to worry about anything. Currently, the ride is set on the softer side for comfort, and it still corners like it is glued to the road. However, the suspension can be adjusted for a stiffer ride if that is preferred.

No expense was spared with the build of this car; over $135,000 was spent, and documented. This is not a home built kit car and unlike most home built kit cars, the engine compartment, trunk and even the undercarriage are finished off with brushed aluminum or stainless steel, and the undercarriage and passenger compartment are insulated. This car was shown with a plate mirror underneath; the entire Jaguar XKE rear suspension and differential is either powder coated, polished or chromed. With the exception of the spark plug wires, all of the wiring is completely hidden. There is a large electric fan that is thermostatically controlled with a manual override, and overheating has never been a problem, even when idling in 100+ degree heat.

The dashboard is completely \"correct\" and has a full complement of the proper Smith\'s gauges, including the appropriate “backward” speedometer. The glovebox door has been personally signed by Carroll Shelby and there is a certificate of authentication to prove it. In the interest of full disclosure, there is no glovebox, only a glovebox door, because the space where the glovebox would be is taken up with a heater that works very well on cold days.

The car has been continuously registered in California as a 1965 Ford Cobra since 1997, so there are no registration or smog issues.

Included in the sale are a custom car cover, a stainless steel mirror to show off the chromed/polished Jaguar differential and independant suspension, a large binder with several hundred pages of detailed receipts and technical sheets that document the entire history of the car from 1995 onward and a tool kit with many specialized tools for the car.

History:

This car is a replica and it is therefore, technically, the car is not a “real” Cobra, it is technically, a “real” Brightwheels Replica Ltd. (BRL) “Viper” that was produced in the mid to late ‘80s in Christchurch, England. The body style indicates that it is an early model that was built with a Jaguar fully independent suspension and rear end. It was brought to the US in 1995, where it underwent a complete professional off the frame restoration with only new parts, and for the next three years, it was strictly a show car which was trailered to and from shows; it only had 125 miles on the odometer after all of that time.

It passed through a few hands over the next several years, and I bought it in late 2004. I bought it to drive, and had the car professionally restored and rebuilt again as a car that could be safely, dependably and comfortably driven on the street byTop of the Hill Performance Centerin Livermore, CA. Although it is a great driver, it still does quite well at car shows; we came home with awards three out of the five times that we took it to the huge “Cherries Jubilee” car show in Monterey, CA. After its restoration, the car has never been raced or used in any open track events or other types of competition. It has been opened up from time to time, just to keep the engine carbon-free, of course.
