Creating the first American “personal” car, Ford’s Thunderbird set the automotive world on its ear when it debuted. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present this 1955 T-Bird. This well-equipped example was made on June 10, 1955. It was the 1,421st vehicle (including Ford passenger cars) turned out at Ford’s River Rouge assembly plant in Detroit, Michigan that day.It had resided with the same loving owner fr the last 16 years, since 2002. The car under went a though restoration that shows well.

Dressed in an eye-popping Goldenrod Yellow (code V), this car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. This hue was a mid-model year addition to the color palette, first made available in March or April 1955. Car comes with two tops, a black, rayon canvas soft-top and a white fiberglass hardtop with rear side portholes from a 1957 T-Bird. In the rear are fender skirts over the rear wheels and a Continental spare tire kit, designed to provide more space in the trunk while adding length to the car.

The car’s glass panels and lights are in excellent order while the car’s bodywork is straight . The engine bay is extremely tidy and the battery appears new. The car’s chrome bumpers are in very good condition.

Under the forward-hinged hood is a 292 CID Y-block V-8 engine from the company’s Mercury division. It has a four-barrel carburetor and breathes via dual exhausts. Backing the engine are a Ford-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.31:1 differential. Driver convenience features include an aftermarket vintage air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, four-way power seats and power windows.

This T-Bird rolls on wide whitewall tires surrounding steel wheels topped with factory wheel covers. The tires are in excellent shape while the wheels are in very good condition.

Inside, the car sports an interior upholstered in black and yellow (code D), which was another March 1955 introduction. This color scheme makes the interior as equally eye-popping as the exterior. The pleated black and yellow seats are in excellent order, as is the black carpeting. The yellow headliner of the hardtop looks great while the two-spoke steering wheel is in excellent condition and the steering column has a three-inch telescoping mechanism. Horn and fuel gauge are inop. The inner door panels are black and yellow, echoing the rest of the interior’s theme. There are minor blemishes on the inner door panels close to the rear fenders. The black instrument panel features a speedometer, tachometer and a clock, also known as the Astra-Dial Control Panel. There’s also an aftermarket engine temperature gauge mounted below the dash. The chrome, floor-mounted shifter is in excellent shape and completing the interior is a retro AM/FM stereo.

Production of the Thunderbird began later on in 1954 on September 9 with the car beginning sales as a 1955 model on October 22, 1954. Though sharing some design characteristics with other Fords of the time, such as single, circular headlamps and tail lamps and modest tailfins, the Thunderbird was sleeker and more athletic in shape, and had features like a hood scoop and a 150-mph speedometer, hinting at a higher performance nature that other Fords lacked. Mechanically though, the Thunderbird could trace its roots to other mainstream Fords. The Thunderbird’s 102-inch wheelbase frame was mostly a shortened version of that used in other Fords while the car’s standard 292 CID Y-block V-8 came from Ford’s Mercury division.

Though inspired by, and positioned directly against, the Corvette, Ford billed the Thunderbird as a personal car, putting a greater emphasis on the car’s comfort and convenience features rather than its inherent sportiness. Ford elected to go the conventional route, eschewing the inline six-cylinder engine with triple sidedraft carburetors, two-speed automatic transmission, fiberglass body, side curtains and lack of exterior door handles that initially hobbled Corvette sales. The Thunderbird sold exceptionally well in its first year, outselling the Corvette by more than 23-to-one.

Convertible competition to the Thunderbird included AC’s Ace, Aston Martin’s DB2-4 Mark II Drophead Coupe, Austin-Healey’s 100, Chevrolet’s Corvette, Jaguar’s XK-140 and Morgan’s Plus 4 TR.

If you want a rolling conversation starter at traffic lights, a car that will turn heads wherever it’s parked, elicit thumbs-up, smiles and honks at stop signs, stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this fabulous Ford Thunderbird.
