HISTORIC 1953 STUDEBAKER COMMANDER COUPE - MILESTONE RAYMOND LOEWY DESIGN!

TRENDSETTER OF THE 1950s!

GENERAL BACKGROUND...The 1953 Studebaker Commander once againproved the forward-looking genius of Raymond Loewy, the world famous industrialdesigner hired by Studebaker to position the brand as a design leader. Unquestionably the sleekest coupe of 1953, itwas so advanced that the body formed the basis of many Studebaker models allthe way through the handsome 1964 Studebaker Golden Hawk.

IMPROVEMENT DETAILS...since 6-voltoriginality has been maintained, a heavy-duty Cadillac starter was installeddue to its proven ruggedness in these applications. Major re-wiring of the car, and repair of theoverdrive were also done. Newupholstery, carpet, and headliner were major interior upgrades.

A MAINTAINEDCLASSIC RATHER THAN A FULL-RESTORATION…it is important for the new owner not to expect a car that has beencompletely disassembled and “made new” on a cost-no-object basis. Rather, the car has been maintained, and hasmany original and un-restored components. The current driver has driven it only locally for enjoyment andparticipation in local shows – where it has been a trophy winner.

Until thismonth, the car had been “hibernating” since October. Like most all 65-year old classic cars, theyare not happy upon being awakened, and a fair amount of tinkering was necessaryto get it running again. We report thisonly to prepare those who may be new to classic car ownership. The fact is, that “every day is an adventure”. What works well on Monday, might not work thesame way on Tuesday. It took tremendousdetermination to keep this historic Studebaker on the road for 65 years, andcontinued repairs and maintenance (often without notice) must be expected aspart of its ownership.

LOCATION: Loganville, GA (36 milesnortheast of Atlanta)

EXCELLENT INVESTMENT –cars of the1950s are highly coveted. IMPERFECTIONS -NO car is perfect. This car is a verynice survivor and quite frankly, is a stunner both on the road and at localshows. But there are some scratches and other imperfections in the painthere and there - some of the chrome and stainless is good - and some chrome isa bit pitted and some stainless has varied dimples and depressions. It was never intended to be a “trailer queen”- but rather – to be something that looks sharp and that can be driven withoutconcern for every rock chip or bug mark that is natural to occur on any carthat is driven.

It has been our goal to put the cameraeverywhere that a discerning buyer would look. In many cases, the camerais showing you how nice the car is. However, if we see a defect, we showit. You will see examples of some imperfections specifically pointed outin the images as examples of what you should expect...so please be sure toexamineALL100+ images.

During the photo-session, we noted thatthe horn, radio, lighter, and one tail-light were not operational. We were able to operate the left side ventopen/closed…but not the right.

ODOMETER NOTE...17,255 miles are indicated on theodometer. Due to its 1953-era 5-digit design limitations, it isimpossible to know the actual mileage of the car since new, and norepresentations as to original mileage are being made.

IMPORTANT UPDATES (3/14/2018):
1) One of the items that needed to be addressed after the winter "hibernation" was the battery. It takes a charge well and will start the car, but will very quickly run-down...so we suspect a current drain somewhere. We are attempting to find the cause, but this is an item that the new owner may have to address as part of the ongoing maintenance and repair that these cars require.
2) We have learned from many helpful Studebaker experts that the interior ventilation door on the left side is NOT missing, but that the car was made this way! The interior vent door on the right front passenger side is used as part of the heat regulation system.
